Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites Headquarters and Demonstration Center

Panola Mountain State Conservation Park

The dual purposes of this facility as the headquarters of the Georgia State Parks Division and an education and demonstration center resulted in a building composed of two major elements, elegantly bridged with a floating canopy that extends out over the pedestrian walkway and vehicular drop off. The granite outcroppings and hills of the Panola Mountain area informed the choice of granite and wood cladding as the building’s primary exterior materials and inspired the curved shapes of the roofs. The roof oriented to the north is interrupted by large clerestory windows that provide generous indirect daylight to the interior spaces. Visitor parking is located at existing paved areas and employee parking is tucked below the building, minimizing the amount of new impervious paving on the site and maximizing landscaped areas around the building and the outdoor patio areas.
